I nodded my head, trying to keep my cool and said softly, “I think you should go.”

“No,” she said standing up, letting her books slide onto the floor, “you need to be true to yourself.”

“I am,” I cried, “you’re the one trying to change me into something I’m not.”

There was a pause that seemed to go on for an eternity. The only sound was of my quickened breathing and the faint gnawing of Katie’s teeth on her pen cap.

“Have you kissed your boyfriend?”

“Of course.”

“Do fireworks go off?”

“What do you mean?”

“Do you feel sparks flying between your lips? Does your heart race so fast that you feel like it’s going to explode?”

“I don’t understand.”

“Like this,” she said, and as if in slow motion, she placed her hands behind my neck and pulled my lips towards hers. They were soft and delicate, colliding with mine, but my state of shock left me unable to move. I felt the coldness of her rings on the back of my neck and her skin smelled like green tea.

When she pulled away, I was still sitting there, frozen except for my hands which were trembling uncontrollably, with my eyes closed and my mouth still partly open.

My heart was pounding faster than ever.

She reached down, stuffing her books in her back pack, and then turned to leave. Before she closed the door behind her she remarked, “Still sure you’re straight?”
